About Philmont

The Boy Scouts of America’s premier National High Adventure Base, Philmont Scout Ranch, emerged in 1938 as Philturn Rocky Mountain Scout Camp. Nowadays, this 140,177 acre sprawling wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo range of the Rocky Mountains is renowned for its unrivaled high adventure and training experiences. Come explore an unforgettable journey that awaits within Philmont!

Philmont is a land of historical significance, with its petroglyphs carved into canyon walls by ancestral Native Americans and Spanish conquistadors who ventured here before the colonists journeyed to the Atlantic coast. This picturesque terrain also saw brave mountain men such as Kit Carson blaze trails across it, while wealthy landowners like Lucien Maxwell planted roots along the Santa Fe Trail. As if that wasn’t enough, miners, loggers and cowboys all staked their claim at one point or another – leaving an indelible mark on this stunning landscape forevermore.

With breathtaking vistas that span from 6,500 to 12,441 feet of elevation and 35 staffed camps along with 55 trail camps for exploration, Philmont Scout Ranch has given more than 1 million Scouts, Venturers and Advisors the opportunity to experience its wonders since 1939.

During the summer, Philmont provides a plethora of activities; however, they also offer seasonal experiences that extend beyond those traditional months. As it has done throughout its storied history, Philmont continues to demonstrate a commitment to low-impact camping methods and conservation efforts which have helped preserve its natural beauty and splendor. Autumn and Winter Adventure are just two examples of how one can revel in the magical wilderness that is Philmont outside of the warm season!
